The Prompt Project
Welcome to my Prompt Project. This is my space to play; this is my space to get out of my writing rut. Hopefully you will gain some enjoyment from this project of mine while getting to know a part of me. You see, I am a writer. A writer who is quite out of practice. I have allowed life to get in the way: a fiancĂ©, a small human child, my job, the dishes in the sink, the movies and TV shows I have in queue, maybe even too much social media. *tucks head in embarrassment* It’s not anyone’s fault but my own. I use those things as excuses, not reasons. I know I’m not the only one, and I know many of you reading this understand where I am coming from.
However, the excuses will always be there; the stories bursting (or just whispering now at this point) in my head will not. I can’t tell you how many ideas have suffered the fate of a short existence simply because the bed needed to be made or the call of my students’ papers to grade was too loud to ignore.
I teach a writing class to amazing and inspiring students learning English as their second language. I make them write something every time they walk into my classroom. While it’s painful for some of them, they all seem to love me for it. I can’t say that I have always pushed myself to rise to the high standards that I set for them. They are writing in a foreign language, and I have a hard time writing a single sentence in my own.
In an effort to become a better and more consistent writer, I am following my own advice for getting out of a rut by playing with writing prompts. My commitment to myself is to post my response to at least one writing prompt per week and see where it takes me.
My hope is that in addition to stretching and strengthening my writing muscles, you will be inspired to create, smile, laugh, cry, or respond in some other way.
Cheers to happy writing and reading,
– Crystal
